Is Smiling During Exercise A Must?

Yesterday evening, after an hour of brisk walking on the treadmill, I proceeded to the stairclimber for a quick five minute workout. Guess I wanted something extra before heading for the weights.

Anyways, as I was working out, this guy kept signaling at me with his palms; as if to ask why. I ignored him till I was done and then I went to him and this was the conversation.

Me: I didn't get what you were trying to say on the machine.
Guy: Why did you have a pained look on your face?
Me: Seriously? Isn't it obvious?
Guy: Well, you don't have to put on that look.

Geez! Perhaps I should put up a mirror on every machine I use so I can see my facial expressions. Is this what we have to put up with? Is smiling a must? I'm trying to amp the intensity of my workouts and this imbecile (forgive me) is interested in my facial expression.

On another note, I've been good so far. I have exercised thrice this week and my eating has been good too. I now take a good lunch and have either cereal ( the good kind) or salads for dinner. How has your week been so far?

  1. I hear you, people are always telling you to smile. I am sorry, if I am working out hard there is NO smiling.

  2. I hate when I walk past some random person and they tell me to smile! If I wanted to smile, I would be smiling. Duh! Way to go getting your workout in even with the smile police on patrol. :)

  5. I LOVE your blog! I started out 2 years ago at 241 lbs and have lost 97 lbs (I recently gained 20 of it back, but am working on getting that off). I have 18 lbs to go to get to my goal weight of 141. The best advice I can give you is to just keep moving forward - no matter what. You have made the commitment to do this and I believe you can and will! Good for you! Be proud of yourself! I look forward to more posts from you! Here's my blog, if you'd like to check it out.
    Best wishes,

  8. If I see anyone smiling at the gym then I want to take whatever happy pills they're taking because I only seem to have pure rage when on a workout machine! LOL

  9. Jeez. What a silly guy.
I smile sometimes while working out, whenever it hits me that "wow, I am really killing it here today". But 99.9% of the time I have all sorts of faces.. Who cares!!!!
